What botulinum toxin does
Botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle in small, measured doses. It reduces the nerve signal to that muscle, so the muscle relaxes and moves less.
On the face this softens lines that come from movement, such as frown lines. On a large muscle like the masseter, the muscle can become less bulky over time, which can make the lower face look narrower.
The effect wears off as the nerve signal recovers. If you want to keep it, treatment is repeated. How long it lasts varies by individual, area and dose.
Where it is used
Lines from movement
Forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet. The aim is lines that soften while you can still frown, smile and raise your brows.
Square jaw (masseter)
If you feel a firm muscle at the back of the jaw when you clench, some of the width is muscle. If the width is mostly bone or fat, toxin will not change it, and the physician will tell you.
Trapezius
The muscle between neck and shoulder. Where it is bulky, relaxing it is intended to give a softer slope from neck to shoulder.
Calves
For calves where the bulk is muscle. It does not reduce fat or change bone shape.

When will I see the effect?
Not on the day. Most people notice a change after a few days, and it keeps building for a couple of weeks. A jaw that is slimmed by relaxing the masseter changes more slowly, over weeks. Results vary by individual.
How long does it last?
It wears off gradually as the muscle recovers. How long varies by individual, area, product and dose, and the physician gives you a realistic range for your plan.
Which product should I choose?

Can I exercise or fly afterwards?

A small trial in women with enlarged jaw muscles found changes in muscle size after botulinum toxin, while repeated treatment also affected muscle function, so it does not establish a universal dose or schedule.
A randomized triple-blinded study in 26 women using abobotulinumtoxinA at 75 units per masseter, a preparation and dose that do not convert to the products listed here. The first treatment was not placebo-controlled, and masticatory performance did not differ significantly between the repeat-treatment groups.
